Many people go about their daily life with pain, aching, and throbbing in their legs, never knowing they are suffering from varicose veins. More than half of all people over the age of 50 in the United States have this treatable condition. If you have decided to seek a solution for venous disease, there are a few steps you can take both before and after treatment that can help keep varicose veins gone for good.
Choose the Right Provider
Finding a trusted and qualified physician who offers the newest and most effective treatment options will increase the likelihood of positive long-term results. At The Vein Institute, our physicians are board certified Interventional Radiologists or IR Physicians. They specialize in diagnosing and utilizing image guidance for minimally invasive procedures. This technique puts the patient at less risk of bleeding, infection, less painful procedures requiring no sedation and limited downtime, smaller incisions, and little to no scarring. Minimally invasive procedures, such as thermal vein ablations, have very low recurrence rates that have made vein stripping and other more invasive treatment options unnecessary.
The first step to effective treatment is an effective screening. Many abnormal veins in the legs are not visible to the naked eye and require a comprehensive ultrasound. Our sonographers devote an hour to each screening so all abnormal veins can be identified and an effective treatment plan can be made by our physicians. After treatment has been performed, each patient is followed closely by ultrasound at one month, three months, six months, and one year follow ups. This allows the physician to monitor healing and to ensure closure of all abnormal veins.
Exercise is extremely important in promoting good venous health. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time can increase your risk for varicose veins. It is important to get on your feet and incorporate physical activity into every day. Our physicians work closely with each patient to obtain an accurate and up to date medical and social history. This aids in finding the safest treatment option for all different types of activity levels.
