Rochester-area doctors share their expertise with a worldwide medical audience.
This past March, the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), a non-profit professional medical society for the Interventional Radiology community, held its annual meeting in Los Angeles. Attended by more than 5,000 physicians, scientists, students, and clinical associates, the meeting showcased presentations and talks on the newest scientific breakthroughs, technologies, and case studies, including vein care. Interventional radiology (IR) is a unique medical field at the forefront of today's medical technology. Typically specialist doctors are classified by the organ they specialize in, for example, a neurologist is a brain doctor and a cardiologist is a heart doctor. An interventional radiologist, however, treats every part of the human body. By employing the latest imaging techniques, they are able to treat many conditions (such as varicose veins, uterine fibroids, and life-threatening bleeds) in the most minimally invasive way possible. This results in less painful procedures, safer and more effective treatments, and quicker and easier recovery. No procedure highlights this more than varicose vein treatments, once only treated by open surgery but now treated at The Vein Institute with the latest minimally invasive outpatient treatments that require minimal recovery. Dr. Raj Pyne, The Vein Institute's Medical Director, was recently appointed to SIR's Executive Council to represent the community of private practice interventional radiologists. Dr. Pyne, who just recently returned from a leadership summit in Washington, D.C., is honored to be the representative voice for private practice IRs, who often experience challenges (and opportunities) that are unique and distinct from the academic realm. Dr. Pyne was invited to give two talks at the 2018 Annual SIR Meeting. The first, "Cosmetic Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins: Advanced Techniques" was filled to capacity. A standing-room audience packed themselves into a large auditorium to hear Dr. Pyne and fellow experts speak about the newest cosmetic techniques.

The second talk was presented alongside Dr. Michael Rivero, who is also an Interventional Radiologist and Assistant Medical Director The Vein Institute, and was titled "Clinical Skills for Building a Successful Stand-Alone Vein Practice". It was part of a half-day Private Practice Symposium ran by Dr. Pyne. It was well-received by the audience, who showed great interest in the topic, asking detailed questions, and staying after the conclusion of the talk for in-depth questioning with both Dr. Pyne and Dr. Rivero.
